Several years ago building a website was a super complex task and only professional web developers were able to cut it. Times have changed and now if you are a smart one you can create a website yourself.

How to Create Website - a Short Guide for Busy People

Now we’re going to show you how to be a pro in web design. There is nothing complex, so keep your eyes open to know how to create a website! You will even be able to produce web designs for other people and earn money from that!

1. Get a Web Host and a Domain Name

Get a Web Host and a Domain Name

In fact, hosting is considered to be a ‘home’ where all of your website pages and files are placed on the web. So if you want your site to be visible you definitely need hosting – everything on the web is hosted somewhere.

Don’t buy web hosting just because it is cheap. Make sure that the provider is trustworthy and provides professional 24/7 support services. This feature is extremely important for both experienced web developers and those who’re new to this field.

When you find a suitable hosting provider take a good look at its pricing plans once again. Most likely there is an interesting scale: the longer period of services that you order the cheaper your annual price would be. So sign up for at least two years or more if you can afford it and if you’re sure you’ll keep your website that long.

The good news is that a lot of hosting providers offer a free domain name if you buy hosting from them. However, the range of available domains is usually limited, so you as well buy a domain name separately.

So if you’re ready to find the best hosting service you can use one of the most popular hosting providers. They will suit every budget and all your business needs. Here they are.

Domain name or a website URL or a website address looks like domainname.com (.co, .uk, .us, .info, .net, .org, .edu, .mobi etc). The domain registration procedure is quite simple and will take just a few minutes. But it’s harder to choose the domain because it’s something that represents your company on the web and everybody wants to find the best one.

Domain names cost from $5 up to $80+ per year. The price depends on the domain extension you choose or TLD. There are a lot of domain registrars such as GoDaddy, Namecheap, 1&1, Name, etc. Every registrar offers different packs of extra services – take these into consideration when looking for the cheapest domain.

It’s a good idea to use your brand name in the website URL. Some people guess that it’s better to choose keyword-rich domains instead of branded ones. However, it’s not all that good. Search engines don’t like users playing SEO tricks on them and don’t blindly believe website addresses. So you should better make your domain user-friendly instead of search engines friendly.

Just a small tip for website owners: register some most popular domain extensions even if you don’t plan to use them. It will save you from unfair competitors who can secretly use your brand and authority for their own (I mean some can register your domain name with a different extension and use it on your behalf, or try to sell it to you at a price much higher than the initial price).

Ok, now keep all these things in mind and choose the best domain name registrar. All of them offer low prices and high-quality customer services. Here you’ll find 3 domain name registrars that are worth working with.

2. Create a Site with an Admin Panel or a Website Builder

How to Create Website with an Admin Panel or a Website Builder

Till this moment everything was quite simple and understandable: you pay for domain/hosting and get it all within a minute. The main problem in the website creation process is making a choice of the right website builder or admin panel to work with. Because obviously gone are the times when the websites were created by programmers who wrote countless lines of codes, these days people use admin panels to build websites using tools similar to Microsoft Word tools.

In fact, there are numerous website builders that will get your website up and running. They can be free or paid (one-time or regular payments). The one we have used and recommend now is a paid CMS that, however, will save you a lot of money.

I’d like to tell you about MotoCMS. You can just log in to your website admin panel and edit the content (add your logo, company name, contacts, texts, etc.) without having any technical skills and writing source code in HTML or PHP. This website builder is also good because it doesn’t need any additional software (Artisteer, Dreamweaver, Adobe Creative Cloud, Microsoft Expression Web, etc.) that can be quite complex for newcomers (and rather costly) – you perform all of the changes right within your browser window and see the results immediately.

How To Create Website - MotoCMS

You can also share the admin panel URL with the admin’s login and password so that other people from your team could assist you in creating the website.

Whatever website builder you choose there are two ways to create a website: from scratch or by using a pre-made website template. The second way is considered to be more preferable because it is faster and simpler (just add your own content to the template and you’re done). If talking about MotoCMS they have a lot of website templates for a lot of business categories. Due to the built-in admin panel, they are rather easy to use even for ordinary people like you and me.

There are some useful features of MotoCMS templates:

  • Drag-and-drop interface;
  • WYSIWYG Editor (What You See Is What You Get);
  • Mobile Editor;
  • Image Editor;
  • Fonts Manager;
  • Interactive image galleries;
  • Google Maps widget;
  • An ability to add YouTube and Vimeo Videos;
  • 24/7 support services.
  • Free lifetime updates of the CMS.

For today MotoCMS has over 500 pre-made designs and this number increases every day. There are designs for small businesses, for photographers and art studios, designers and politicians, agriculture and financial companies, education and charity organizations, cafes and restaurants, etc.

As an alternative, take a look at IONOS website builder.

3. Take the Total Control of Your Website

How to Create Website

Some people think that when a website is published on the web the work is completely done and they can start getting profit from it. Not a chance! It’s just a starting point for further website maintenance that includes content updating, search engine optimization (SEO), tracking the website traffic and audience activity (Google Analytics tool).

MotoCMS templates are good for SEO purposes because they are easily crawled by search engines so you can get higher positions in search results. You can and definitely should add pages titles, URLs, keywords, descriptions and other stuff like that. You can also close some pages from search engines indexing. When it comes to SEO the main thing is to set realistic goals and your website will be encouraged by Google, Yahoo, Bing, etc.

If you’ve just built a website it may have the sense to submit its URL to search engines to get them to know about the newcomer:

  • Submit your site to Google
  • Submit your site to Bing

This option is needed if your site has no external links (when other websites link back to you). Otherwise, search engines already know about your business.

Conclusion

As you probably understand this is not an exhaustive guide on how to create a website. On the web, you can also find a lot of interesting and useful tips to take into account. But in this post we tried to show you the basics that will allow you to get the site up and running!

Nowadays iOS 7 is so hot that even if you don’t use iPhone or iPad you’re still sure to have heard about all of the neat features and slick design elements of this operating system. Ok, probably you don’t know all the features exactly, but as techie person you are at least aware of the latest tech trends. Well we have a surprise for you today! We’re going to show you top website templates designed in iOS 7 style.

Top Website Templates Designed in iOS 7 Style

But first let’s name the most prominent features of iOS 7 design (aside from the fact that it’s flat – that’s too obvious).

  • Minimalism. In fact, in recent years minimalism is constantly popular among web designers and end users. You may see a lot of white space on web pages. It is considered to be good because it helps site visitors focus on content.
  • Super-elliptical shape. Updated icons of the new iOS are more curved now. The same applies to web design elements such as menu bars, banners, buttons and decorations.
  • Table views and lists. Content arranged in tables is not boarded anymore. Table cells are separated with blanks. Though the entire look is absolutely clean.
  • Outlined icons. Icons without a fill color are rather popular in flat design. They complete the minimalistic look of the entire project.
  • Light typography. Usually regular or bold typefaces are too excessive for clean and simple designs. Thus there are about 260 fonts to use within your iOS 7-style projects.
  • Headers. For iOS 7 web designs it is essential to merge headers into the background color. Thus a header and a menu bar create an eye-catchy visual element that adds more screen space for content below.

So if you want to bring more clarity to your website this new trendy style is for you. To get a good flat design you just need to take away all elements that can annoy people (lines, textures, ornaments, gradients, etc.). Or you can choose a ready-made website template designed in iOS 7 style from below.

To design effective websites, you need to know basic color theory rules. These rules can save you from crucial mistakes, but today we’d like to draw your attention to those errors made by someone else.

Colors to avoid in web design

People are visual, so when they see a poorly designed website, they just run away. They won’t look for your Buy Now or Sign Up buttons because somebody with a more user-friendly website is waiting for them somewhere on the web. You have a lot of competitors, so don’t reduce your chances of generating conversions. For instance, when you create an online class or a webinar, think well of the structure and design or address professionals in the sphere who will make it visually correct and attractive, like Webinar Care.

Most of the bad web design examples from this post were created long ago. Nobody cares about their redesign, and they just exist. Meanwhile, there are relatively new websites designed by some “professionals” who appear to have eyes at the back of their heads. Of course, some designs below are hands-down ugly, some are better – still, they could have been made with a more insightful colors approach. It’s very strange to see these sites because nowadays, most people have unlimited access to the web to learn everything (and the color theory too).

So after analyzing some fatal color combinations of the worst web designs, we concluded that we have to warn you against using these combinations, especially if you are involved in the web design industry as eCommerce web designer.

Shades of Green, White, and Yellow on a Green Background

Green is a fantastic color that indicates balance and harmony. But when you place it as a page background, you risk creating a creepy design. That might sound harsh, but a few people can create a nice-looking website with green as a background, and nobody can do it well if this background is supplemented with green, yellow, or white text without padding.

Green and yellow are placed too close to each other on the color spectrum, which causes yellow to melt into the background. It makes the entire design look inaccurate. Moreover, yellow and white texts are almost unreadable when they are placed on a green background.

Light Objects on a Light Background

To get more site visitors involved, you need to make buttons and calls to action more visible and texts more readable. People shouldn’t think about what’s been written there on your pages – they expect clarity. That’s where contrast is needed. According to experts from Thesishelpers.com, the most important elements should stand out so that people understand what you want from them and what they can get from you in return. If your website suffers from this issue, considering a website rebranding that focuses on improving contrast and text readability could be a beneficial approach.

Look at the screenshots of websites that combine colors that are too light. The overall look of these pages is dull: all elements blend, and texts are almost impossible to read.

We understand that it can be hard to find true colors combination, especially when you are a beginner. So if there is a need, you can find a suitable palette using one of the following color checking tools. All of them are free.

Too Bright Color Combinations

When choosing colors that are too bright, your website will suck! It can still look bad whether you use 2, 3, or 10 colors. For sure vivid tones grab people’s attention. They work well when creating buttons, menus, or other essential layout elements, but when the entire website is designed with one or several neon tones – that’s just a regular tastelessness. Moreover, when people see a lot of colorful boxes and texts, they don’t know which one to click, so all your calls to action are useless.

Bright Textured Website Backgrounds with Colored Texts

The background is something that makes your web pages more attractive and design elements more noticeable. It shouldn’t distract visitors’ attention from the on-page information. However, some designers do everything the wrong way. They choose the most vivid and neon color mixes and supplement them with colored texts. Ultimately, the website looks like an absolute nightmare, with unreadable texts and spooky images that irritate people.

If you want a textured background, try not placing text and images directly on it. Use some shapes with high opacity to block everything underneath. However, avoiding such extremes as highly textured backgrounds would be better.

Vibrant Tones on a Black Background

Black is an intense color that inverts other tones and makes them look too bright, even if they are not so vivid. People are used to mixing black with any color without a doubt because it always goes well. However, computer screens and mobile phone displays have different color rendering, and it can happen that your design will look unexpectedly bad.

You should be careful using bright tones (red, blue, green, purple, pink) on a pitch-black background. It creates an aggressive look whether you add text or images. Neon colors shine too strongly and complicate texts’ readability.

Too Many Colors in One Design

You probably know that too much of anything is wrong. It’s especially important in color theory. Too many colors are not just bad looking – they annoy and irritate potential customers. It even happens that rainbow-colored web pages are decorated with blinking and sparkling elements. Some designers think it might be impressive, and it is so! However, people are too impressed and want to close the weird window/tab right after they enter it.

Web designers from all over the world conclude that it’s better to make designs with only 3 colors. For any kind of business-related design, such as customized checks, a decent color combination is an absolute necessity these days. Especially in the case of checks, it’s mandatory to use the best printer for checks so that the color combination turns out to be pleasant when printed. It’s hard to argue with this statement after viewing the bad web design examples below.

Blue Background with Any Colors

Bright blue is the wrong background color. It doesn’t matter which colors you choose for texts and other page elements – blue will still be too strong for them. It makes all texts look badly readable, and eyes quickly get tired of it.

There is also a psychological reason not to use too much bright blue: BSOD screens have blue backgrounds. Nobody likes viewing them unexpectedly because it usually means that your computer has crashed and needs your help. Blue websites can be associated with Operation System crashes, so people will try to avoid them.

Would you like to save time when editing photos and images in Photoshop? Every professional designer and photographer have to know this secret, because it’s really awesome! Use Photoshop Actions and you’ll avoid many troubles and time loss! Once record an action in Photoshop and then use it forever. If you’re too lazy to create your own action or you just don’t want to be tied up with it, you can find some pack of Photoshop actions on the web and install them into Photoshop.

Frankly speaking, I’m a quite lazy girl that’s why I prefer to download free Photoshop actions on the web and to install them with a few mouse clicks.

How to Install Photoshop Actions

Firstly download the Photoshop action you like to anywhere on your computer. And then choose the preferable way to install it.

  • Go to ‘Disk C:’ – ‘Program files’ – ‘Adobe Photoshop CS x’ – ‘Presets’ – ‘Actions’. There you’ll see several files with .atn extension. Drag and drop your new action into that folder and restart Photoshop.
  • There is also an alternative way to install Photoshop actions that is also rather simple. From the right Photoshop toolbar open Actions menu and from the drop-down list choose ‘Load Actions’. A small popup will allow you to upload any actions from your computer.

Now you know how to install Photoshop actions. You can download each of the following ones. By using these 30 Photoshop actions for retro effect you can make your pictures look amazingly old. I know that you appreciate giving photos and images a vintage grungy look and now you can do it on the fly.

By the way, here on Design Web Kit you can find more interesting materials about and for Photoshop:
